Eastern Light is now starting construction of the Nordic Corridor, a major new fiber cable system between Sweden and Finland. The project includes the new SF-II connection, with an total investment of approximately EUR 30 million. Together with Eastern Light’s existing SF-I subsea cable, it will create the shortest and highest-capacity systems for digital communication between Sweden and Finland.

Eastern Light already operates the SF-I subsea cable between Sweden and Finland, with 144 fibers. The new SF-II connection will now be built out, adding a further 288 fibers through a combination of terrestrial fiber and subsea cables. Together, the two systems will form the Nordic Corridor. The system will provide such extensive capacity that digital communication between Sweden and Finland is not expected to be limited by fiber infrastructure for the foreseeable future.

“ We are seeing rapidly growing demand for digital capacity in the Baltic Sea region, driven primarily by investments in data centers across the Nordics. Several of the existing cable systems are old and are beginning to reach full utilization. That is why we need to expand digital capacity between the countries. The Nordic Corridor is an important step in meeting this development,” says Mikael Vesterlund, COO of Eastern Light.

The build-out of SF-II will take place in several stages. The first milestone — reaching Finnish territorial waters near the Åland archipelago — was completed in May. The cable will be laid only in national waters, reducing risks compared with routes that pass through international waters and making any repairs easier to carry out. The Nordic Corridor is owned and financed by Nordic interests.

“The Nordic Corridor is a project of critical importance to society. In the event of security incidents, data must be able to take alternative routes. That is why we are now strengthening the robustness of the system by building a new fiber connection between Sweden and Finland. More cables are needed,” says Mikael Vesterlund.
